Spark: Igniting Innovation in Education

Changing existing institutions is one battle; inventing the future is another. That's where Spark, the Armenia Education Initiative's (AEI) Social Innovation Incubator, comes into the picture. Named "Kaits" in Armenian (or "spark" in English), this program catalyzes bold new solutions by harnessing the creativity of our educators and alumni from AEI's various programs.

Why Spark?

Because the problems in education won't be solved with the same old methods. Those closest to the problems, including teachers, former teachers, and community leaders, often have game-changing ideas, yet traditionally aren't empowered to launch ventures or lead reform beyond their classroom. Spark flips that script: if you can dream it and it will help students learn, we'll help you build it. It is the first and only incubator in Armenia dedicated exclusively to education ventures.

Who it's for?

Spark is open to all alumni of AEI’s programs, including Teach For Armenia, Seroond, and our various academic and certification courses. We also consider other educators and young innovators case by case, especially in partnership with our alumni. The common thread is on-the-ground experience and passion to innovate.

How Spark works: three phases

  • PITCH: For the seed of an idea. Self-guided modules and workshops help participants refine the concept, validate the need, and learn the basics of social entrepreneurship. They practice pitching and develop a simple pilot proposal; the best pitches receive micro-grants or in-kind support.
  • PROTOTYPE: For those with a clearer plan or a small pilot. Intensive mentorship, expert connections, and training in impact measurement, financial planning, and user-centered design. Participants build a working prototype (e.g. an app, a curriculum, a community center model) and get help registering a nonprofit or business and navigating funding.
  • LAUNCH & ACCELERATE: The most promising ventures move to the last phase. Ventures that have completed the Pitch and Prototype Phases through Spark focus on organizational capacity for growth through the Launch track, while the Accelerate track emphasizes executive consultation, networking, and talent recruitment for successful ventures that have already demonstrated a successful track record.

Types of Innovations:

  • An alumna prototyping an EdTech platform that uses AI to personalize Armenian-language literacy practice for early graders.
  • A team that launched a mobile science lab traveling to remote villages, bringing hands-on STEM to schools without labs.
  • A group that created a mental health curriculum and teacher training to support students dealing with trauma.
  • Policy-oriented innovations, such as a new model for integrating vocational training into high schools.
  • Community-based ventures, including an alumni duo running a leadership summer camp for girls from border regions.

If it addresses education disparities or quality in public education, it's game.

Support and Mentorship

Spark participants gain access to our entire network: mentorship from seasoned professionals, Teach For All network experts, and industry leaders; connections to government officials for piloting; a peer community of fellow innovators; and skill-building workshops from business planning to public speaking to crowdfunding.

Impact so far:

  • Dozens of projects have been supported, with several spinning out into independent organizations or continuing pilots.
  • A culture shift: teachers and alumni now see entrepreneurship as a viable path. From "someone should fix this" to "I will fix this."
  • Several ventures have attracted additional external funding after Spark, totaling tens of thousands of dollars.
  • Spark has established AEI as a thought leader in innovation, not just a program implementer, but a platform people bring their ideas to.

Spotlighting Our Ventures

  • DuEL (Armenian for “You Too”): Tested with more than 400 students across all 10 regions of Armenia, DuEL provides work-based learning experiences that help young people, particularly those in rural communities, explore career pathways and make more informed decisions about their futures.
  • Nor Das (Armenian for "New Lesson"): Responding to Armenia's new teacher recertification requirements, Nor Das developed gamified online learning modules to help educators prepare for certification exams. Teachers using the platform reported 15–25% higher attestation scores.
  • Havasar (Armenian for "Equal"): Now operating through a subscription-based model, Havasar promotes inclusive education by making textbooks accessible to students with visual and hearing impairments through audio narration and sign-language-supported video content.

Vision

We intend to grow Spark into a powerhouse incubator and accelerator producing solutions scalable beyond Armenia. Armenia can be a hub of education innovation for the region: our unique challenges force creative solutions, and those solutions can help other countries too.
